Samsung Blue Earth: Eco friendly to the max!

Posted in Eco Friendly on February 13th, 2009

Yesterday Samsung introduced their future addition to the eco-friendly mobile phone battle. We have already seen other mobile phone manufacturers including Nokia with the Nokia Remade and Motorola with the W233 Renew (to name a few) showing us glimpses of what they will be offering to the mobile phone eco-friendly market. There is also going to be a big featured from LG in the forthcoming Mobile World Congress, (which takes place from the 16th to the 19th of February in Barcelona) which will show us their solar powered mobile phones.
Samsung addition will be called the Samsung Blue Earth. As like other eco phones, we see the phones casing made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles. However the Blue Earth takes this one step further. The Blue Earth contains a solar panel on the back of the phone that will help charge the phone. The solar panel will need to be in direct sunlight in order to do so; which is not so easy in the UK however sounds like a really good idea in countries a little closer to the equator.
The phone also boasts a few other quite impressive eco features. The Samsung Blue Earth will be built out of entirely eco friendly components, there will no sight of a harmful substance that may cause damage to the environment when the phone is discarded (this includes such substances as Beryllium, Brominated Flame Retardants and Phthalate.)
It just keeps going; there will also be a unique interface on the Blue earth that will tell its user how many trees it has actually saved by making the effort to walk instead of driving to their destination! Last but not least, there will be an “Eco Mode” that will enable the adjustment of the screen’s brightness and backlight in order to save additional energy and the phones charge.
All it all, this looks like a really decent phone, we will have to wait and see to see exactly what functionality and features this phone will have to offer, but from the eco point of view it does a fair way to ticking all the right boxes. The Samsung Blue Earth will be available from the second half of 2009, further pricing details with regards to its pay as you go price and what the Blue Earth contract price will be will be provided in the next few months. We do expect some really cool Blue Earth exclusive videos and reviews to become available at the Mobile World Congress.
