Now, call us cynical, but why is it that any phone that’s being targeted – in the marketing spiels of the phone manufacturers – towards this yoof, just so happens to be cheap and, well, a little bit crappy.

Okay, so that’s harsh. The Samsung Genio Touch isn’t really crappy per se, only crappy compared to lots of other phones out there. 2MP camera, 90MB internal memory, etc and so on and so forth. Which obviously makes this thing cheaper than most phones out there. But we just think this is all a bit patronising to claim that therefore this is a phone for the yoof.

Is no one else struggling for money these days? Would no one else appreciate a full touchscreen phone with haptic response for not very much money? And aren’t some kids out there as rich as princes?

Fair enough, you’ve got to draw the line somewhere, and we’re sure there’s a whole lorry load of research showing that ninety-something percent of people who buy this are going to have spotty faces and enjoy the odd happy slap now and then, but… come on, manufacturers – can’t you broaden your horizons a little.

Well, we know you have lots of other times to celebrate. The many birthdays of all the cast of every Star Trek, Star Wars, Batman and Superman shows and films give you reasons to celebrate just about every day of the year. But, today you can have an extra glass of orange cordial and maybe a double chocolate doughnut because behold: a super spy-like watchphone is coming your way in the shape of the Samsung S9110. As you can see from the picture, this is a nifty little watchphone from the guys who brought us the SPH-WP10 a whopping – and baffling – ten years ago. And perhaps most vitally of all, with a release date of sometime just about now in France, the Samsung S9110 is beating the much hyped (and equally much priced, at £1000), LG GD910 to the market by a whole month.

Details, even despite that soon-to-be-released status are scant on the ground, but you can still have a look at this Samsung S9110 review, or at these Samsung S9110 deals to get a sneak peek at what the future holds. And you just enjoy those extra doughnuts today, you special little guys. Soon you’ll be able to chat about comics, disparage the director of the next Batman film and claim that you don’t need a relationship anyway, all without having to even reach into your sticker-filled pockets.

Frankly though, we’re going to leave the detective work to you, because our remit extends only to the phone itself, only to pointing you towards Samsung Preston deals, for example, or sticking a grubby finger up and saying go hither towards Samsung’s official page. You’ve seen much of this before, in fact, because the S5600 is little more than an update of the obscenely successful Tocco Lite. And, well, that can only be a good thing, right? Because as mid-range (i.e. not ridiculously expensive) touchscreens went, the Tocco Lite was a right little humdinger. And fair enough you lose a bit of touchscreen size with this one, but we think that’s more than made up for by the addition of the 3G, the GPS and the tweaks to the camera. Don’t believe us? Packing a quite incredible 12 megapixels, the Samsung Pixon 12 (see what they’ve done there with the name? Very clever) still won’t necessarily be a good camera. Why is that? Well, the reason that, say, a 12 megapixel digital SLR takes good pictures is that it has a huge light sensor, on which those 12 million pixels are spread out across. Meaning well balanced pictures, crisp images and no digital fuzz whatsoever. The Pixon 12, when it comes down to it, is still just a phone, meaning that the light sensor on it is relatively tiny. It might still have 12 million light receptive pixels, but they’re crammed into such a small place that many won’t be functioning as well as they could be.

Anyway, maybe we should speculate too much – there’s a chance Samsung have pulled off something special here and we’ll hold our tongues til we’ve had more a decent go playing with it. And even if it’s not a fantastic camera, with the AMOLED screen, TouchWiz interface and a few other nice bits and bobs, the Pixon 12 is still a decent enough camera in its own right. That’s why we’re getting all hot under the collar as more and more Android phones get released, one of the first of which is the i7500. And yes, we know, the HTC Magic was the first UK Android phone, but that didn’t exactly splash down with any great fanfare, most people being unable as they are to get over the preconception of HTC being merely a business-phone maker. The Samsung i7500 though is the first phone from a company in the global top three mobile phone manufacturers to unveil an Android-powered phone (Nokia and Sony Ericsson complete that triumvirate, in case you’re wondering. So, what do you get with this thing that we’re so excited about? The short answer is, pretty much everything Google do (and do so well). So that includes:

• Google Maps – the integrated GPS receiver enables comprehensive use of features such as My Location, Google Latitude, Street View, local searches and detailed route descriptions
• Gmail
• YouTube
• Google Calendar
• Google Talk

What more do we need to say? The i7500 also has a whole host of other features that’ll tickle your fancy, but all we need to say here is Googlegooglegoogleonaphone! Check out this Samsung i7500 review for a full rundown of those non-Google specs, or have a look at this geektastic video:

The Samsung Jet , though, with its new version of the TouchWiz User Interface, does actually feel new and fresh. We’ve already mentioned this TouchWiz thing in relation to the other crop of new Samsung phones released recently, but it’s almost as though it makes more sense on the Samsung Jet S8000 than anywhere else. This, most likely, is because the Jet is a fun, mid-range-and-proud-of-it kinda phone, and so the fun yet functional cube-based UI seems to fit perfectly. Basically, all you need imagine is that the entire UI is based around the faces of a cube. Pressing the cool cube button on the bottom of the phone brings up the floating 3D shape, on the face of which are the links to the applications and functions you want to access. Sounds simple? Well, it is. And that’s why it’s so great. Within minutes you’re chopping, changing, flicking and swapping between all the different things the Samsung Jet S8000 does, as though all your fingers have ever desire in life is an interactive cube in their lives…

Not only this, but the phone is an absolute stunner. In fact, there’s currently no mid-range (that’s, smallish touchscreen, at 3.1”, and not of the highest specs out there) phone that looks, feels or even just gives of the impression of being so nice as this thing. The deep gloss finish is slick as can be, there’s a great kaleidoscopic patterning on the back, and it feels absolutely perfectly snug in your hand. There’s currently no release date on this thing, but expect it sometime in the not too distant future. In the meantime, check out this Samsung Jet Review, or feast your eyes on this lovely video:

Anyway, it looks like this is going to be one hell of a phone. And we mean that in both senses of the term ‘looks’. First, and most impressively of all, is the screen. At a whopping 3.7” the active matrix OLED (AMOLED) display is the largest OLED screen you can find on any mobile device, whether phone or dedicated media player. The 800 x 480 pixel resolution is really sharp and crystal clear with deep blacks giving a fantastic contrast to everything. Secondly, though, it’s the actual interface that has impressed us most. Running the new 2.0 version of TouchWiz, Samsung’s touchscreen-specfic interface that uses the Windows Mobile platform and turns it into something special, we think this is one of the best looking UI’s you’ll find. Totally customisable, very intuitive, and just plain fun to boot, TouchWiz is one of the best ways to interact with your phone we know about

There’s also an 8.1 megapixel camera onboard the Samsung Omnia 2 I8000, video recording up to WVGA resolution, to match the built-in 800 by 480 pixel screen, all your usual GPS, WiFi, 3.5G HSDPA connectivity for top notch 7.2Mbps Web browsing and a beast of a battery to make sure all this can be handled. There’s no final word yet on how much internal strorage the Samsung Omnia 2 I8000 will be packing, but our educated guess is there’ll be at least a couple of options around the 8-16GB area, with plenty of room to expand a great deal with MicroSD cards.

All-in-all, it’s probably not going to come cheap, but we think this little (or rather, huge) thing is going to be worthy every penny. Check out a Samsung Omnia 2 review here, or have a little squizz at this video

Aiming to be a lighter version of the all-powerful Omnia series, the Samsung Omnia Lite doesn’t excel in any particular department but certainly doesn’t fall short either. The 3.0” display’s not all that hot, nor is the 3 megapixel camera, but it is packing 3.5G, A-GPS, WiFi and up to 3.6mbps on HSDPA. And it’s in the looks department that the Samsung Omnia Lite really improves on the rest of the Omnia range. Where they are mostly bulky and almost brick like (some of them, at least), this is very slim, with nice brushed metal features and a cool patten effect on the back. In fact, at 107 x 52 x 13mm this is one of the smallest smartphones around. And at just over 103 grams it’s also one of the lightest.

The Samsung Omnia Lite B7300 also comes with the latest version of TouchWiz, Samsung’s adaptation of the User Interface that not features on all Samsung touchscreen devices. This is a piece of software that gets better every time we see it, and you’ll no doubt love all the customisable functions it has. Did we mention the 3D multimedia player, multi-push email access, access to the Microsoft Office Suite…

The reason the screen’s so special on this thing is that it’s an AMOLED, which stands for “active-matrix organic light-emitting diode”. As you all knew. The best thing about this new piece of kit is that it is not only ultra thin and bright, but because it doesn’t require a backlight it is low-power and (relatively) low-cost. So expect an impressively juicy display for not a huge amount of money when the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 gets released sometime in October. At some point this kind of technology will make it to your TV screens too – just picture wafer thin Plasmas hanging from your walls and you’ll see the future is very bright indeed.

Aside from the screen, the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 smartphone also has a decent sized slide-out QWERTY, 5 megapixel camera, 3.5G support, TV-out, WiFi, GPS and all the other expected features, so it’s going to be a fully fledged member of the smartphone family.

Overall, the Samsung S3500 is said to be an entry level phone with basic features and not very advanced technology. However, it does have a bunch of interesting features like 2.2-inch TFT screen, with QVGA resolution of 240 x 320, and capable of displaying over 16M colors. The phone is also equipped with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and a standard microUSB port for quick and convenient data transfer. Features such as these definitely increase its desirability in the low range category of mobile phones.

But, that’s not all. This phone also features a 2 megapixel camera with digital image stabilization and panorama shot capability as well as QVGA video shooting capability. This means that you will be able to take great quality shots with your mobile phone and will eliminate the need to carry a separate gadget, the digital camera on your travels. The Orange also comes with a microSD card slot that enables you to expand the memory of the phone up to 16GB. However, the best aspect of the XXX is perhaps the sleek metallic body that exudes style and confidence. I have no doubt that the phone will be a trendsetter in the low cost category of mobile phones. And, there is no doubt as well that I am going to get this phone as soon as it is in the market.
